10 Things About Miss Shortcakes

Jessica Ting, a.k.a. Miss Shortcakes, is a dedicated cake decorator, pastry chef, chef, and food lover. With her more than 15 years of experience in pastry and cake decorating, she is able to create magical cakes for weddings, engagements, christenings, and all other special occasions that require something a little bit different. Be it a design dreamed up from an invitation or a piece of fabric, Miss Shortcakes is all about turning creative ideas into extraordinary cakes.

Let's hear from Jessica the 10 Things About Her:

1. I am an Advertising graduate and was a junior copywriter in 1998 until I got retrenched twice, during the Asian Economic Crisis! Then decided to pursue my dream to becoming a chef.

2. The book, “The Alchemist” by Paolo Coehlo was my inspiration in following my dream. And here I am, 16 years later, still loving what I do.

3. I started Miss Shortcakes in Sydney, Australia, from my tiny apartment. My counter tops in my kitchen were so narrow, so I had to roll out the fondant, on my coffee table, on my knees!

4. I worked for FREE, in Sydney, while waiting for my work visa to come through in Sydney’s finest fine dining restaurants in the pastry kitchen.

5. I was placed second, in the Australian Bridal Industry Awards in 2009, for Best Cake Design in NSW, only falling short by 2% to the winner!

6. I was a special guest chef, and cooked for the entire Malaysian Cabinet at a luncheon in 1999, featuring Malaysian exotic meats.

7. I started my cake decorating career with an Italian family-run business in Sydney, and travelled one a half hours, each way, to get to work, and back for 7 months. Then, I had to move closer.

8. My little boy, Jaxon, is currently undergoing serious training to become my future assistant. His favourite colours are Turquoise, Delphinium Blue and Raspberry.

9. My business name came from making the best Strawberry Shortcakes in my pastry team, at the Westin Sydney.

10. If I weren’t a cake artist, I think I would love to be a food writer, travelling the world, tasting new and exciting dishes for the rest of my life.
