Yumcious – A Community Marketplace for Homemade Food

In this glorious land and country everyone fondly calls Malaysia, we know that good and tasty food of all variety and cuisine is in abundance. The eating and cooking craze often goes hand in hand as food connoisseurs often pick up the art of cooking to feed their own insatiable palate. Resulting from this, we have created our own circle of Malaysian master chefs in every neighbourhood and circle of friends. Now Yumcious has developed a marketplace which gives every Malaysian the opportunity to taste delicious home cooked food, delivered right to the doorstep!

About Yumcious

Yumcious started in September 2015 and was founded on a simple idea that great food shouldn’t be so hard to come by. They have taken this idea and created a community around it; culinary masterminds amongst us make dishes they’re passionate about, Yumcious’ rider friends deliver the food straight to anyone wherever you are, and everyone gets to eat, review, curate, and recommend those amazing meals.

Yumcious is more like a community than just an online restaurant. People are free to join and sell their foods and make money. They specialise in home cooked foods that aren’t made for mass production, resulting in the food prepared with care and love, just like our mothers would.

Most of us have some friends who are awesome cooks and we think their food is sure to be a sellout when made available at a restaurant or cafe. However, running a food business requires more than just cooking talent. One needs huge capital to start-up a food business, high operating expenses, and the skill to juggle between managing the business and cooking at the same time. In the age of gig economy, the founders think something had to be done. Talented cooks shouldn’t be hindered from cooking for the public at large just because they can’t afford to run a restaurant. Good food needs to be more accessible – hence Yumcious was born.

Yumcious’ Driving Factor

They are solving three major problems faced by three group of users; for cooks, they don’t have enough resources and time to start or manage a food business, for food couriers; low income and high unemployment rate, and for buyers, expensive restaurant’s food and lack of variety.

By using Yumcious’ platform, cooks can now kick-start or run their business at zero cost, food couriers can generate a decent income opportunity, and buyers have access to huge variety of food at cheaper price. All cook partners are all vetted by them. This is to ensure only the best quality of food listed on the platform. They host an onboarding session where we conduct food tasting (with participation from our regular buyers), food photography, and briefing on terms and conditions. Should they pass, they will be further briefed on SOP, packaging, labeling, anddelivery arrangement. This will prepare the cooks with everything they need to know so they can focus on what they do best; cooking. They are helping the home cooks in almost every aspect of the business, including marketing, ordering, payment, customer service, and food delivery so that they could just focus on cooking and creating new menus.

Currently only halal food is allowed to be sold on the marketplace and are operating in Kuala Lumpur only. For the next six to twelve months, they forsee expansion to other major cities like Penang and Johor Bahru. Next would be to expand regionally, which is to tap into the South East Asian market.

We believe good food shouldn’t be hard to come by, and it should be ideally cheaper. We think with Yumcious, this is possible. Home-based business requires small operational cost and this should lower the price of the food being offered, and there are more talented cooks out there that need to be discovered.
