To have a good career path, is not just about doing your own thing. It is also about how you socialise and behave as a person. Here are 10 career mistakes that I personally learned. They might not be crucial but if not avoided, can be damaging to you in the long run. If you are committing one of these mistakes, now is the time to rectify it.
1) You think that you are capable alone
The biggest career mistake that anyone can make is to think that you outsmart the rest and you can succeed all by yourself. A work place is an organization formed by people. It is all about team work and how much support you can get from your colleagues. You'll never thrive in your career if your mentality says "Look, i'm smarter than you!".
2) You don’t have that “Listening” factor
Being able to listen patiently is a sign of high EQ and showing respect to your colleagues. As a colleague, it’s extremely important that you let your colleagues talk without butting in before they get to finish off their sentences. Learn to be a listener at your workplace, so your colleagues will continue to share with you the next time .
3) You gossip too much
You don’t want to be known as a chatty patty at your workplace because no one likes a gossipy fellow. Gossiping too much will only make you look bad because it is an act by wicked people who want to stir up trouble and break up friendships. Always remember, those who gossip to you, will gossip about you.
4) You are bossy
You might be dominant but you don't need to be bossy. A bossy person always tell people what to do. Instead, learn to empower people to know what to do. Remember the difference between a boss and a leader; boss says "go" and a leader says "let's go".
5) You are too shy
As much as people don’t like a talkative person, they also find it hard to mingle with introverts or someone, who keep to themselves. Go on and network around! It’s good to be out there and be available to your colleagues. You have got nothing to lose anyway.
6) You are not open minded
If you want to improve on yourself at work, then you should be more open minded. You should welcome criticisms and new ideas from your colleagues. Your way is not the only way!
7) You choose money over experience
The worst mistake anyone can commit to is making money their priority instead of values and experience. Sure, making money is nice in the short run, but making experience your priority, in turn, will help you succeed and become more valuable in the long run.
8) You have too much self-focus
The secret to be successful is not to be self-centred. That’s right! The biggest career mistake you can make is to be too much of an ego prick. It will never end well, as you will find yourself without any support from your peers. It’s best to help others so that they can help you reach the top or wherever you want to reach in life.
9) You have outdated skills
In a world where everything is moving fast, don't choose to stay behind in your own little bubble. You have to remember that there are others, who are much more in touch with technology than you are and who are also ready to take your place in the blink of an eye. Not keeping your skills up to date is a huge step back that your career will suffer. Upgrade yourself, go attend trainings!
10) You get too personal at work
Ask any seniors, they will tell you that it’s best to keep your professional life at work and your personal life at home. Once you mix both, you are in for the ride of your life; one that you never asked to be part of in the first place!
