Malaysian staple food is rice. While there are many types of “nasi” (rice dishes) in Malaysia, find out below the delicious rice dishes that you can find in Malaysia.


1) Nasi Lemak

Nasi Lemak is a fragrant rice dish that is cooked in “santan” (coconut milk). It is considered as one of the most famous dish for breakfast. Nasi Lemak is usually served with anchovies, peanuts, boiled egg, cucumber and “sambal”  (traditional chili paste).

2) Nasi Kerabu

Nasi Kerabu is a type of nasi ulam which is blue in colour. It is eaten with dried fish or fried chicken, crackers, pickles and other salads. It is also eaten with solok lada and fried keropok.

3) Nasi Minyak

Nasi minyak literally means oil rice. It is widely served in special occasion in Malaysia such as wedding. It is usually eaten with acar, spicy chicken or meat dish such as rendang.

4) Nasi Dagang

Nasi Dagang is rice steamed in coconut milk, fish curry and other ingredients such as fried shaved coconut, hard boiled eggs and vegetable pickles.

5) Nasi Tomato

Nasi Tomato is rice cooked with tomato sauce or paste, milk, dried spices, and a sautéed rempah base of garlic, onions, ginger. Nasi tomato is often eaten with ayam masak merah.

6) Nasi Ayam

Nasi Ayam is rice cooked in chicken stock with ginger and pandan leaves with just the right amount of oiliness. The chicken is steeped in boiling water till it is fully cooked before soaking it it cold water to ensure that the meat remains tender. The chicken can also be roasted for a different taste. This dish is also served with red chili sauce dip that have the right blend of spiciness and sourness.

7) Nasi Tumpang

Nasi Tumpang is rice with different layer of dishes wrapped tightly in a cone shape with banana leaf packed consist of omelette, beef or fish floss, shrimp or fish local curry, sweet sambal gravy and cucumbers.

8) Nasi Kandar

Nasi Kandar is a meal of steamed rice in which it can be plain or mildly flavored. It is served with a variety of curries and side dishes.

9) Nasi Ambeng

Nasi Ambeng is a fragrant rice dish consists of white rice that is prepared with chicken curry or chicken cooked in soy sauce, vegetables, fried noodles, salted fish, fried coconut flesh, etc.
