There are some behaviors of a gentleman that every man should adopt to make this world a better place. In particular, some men still have a long way to go before being categorised as a true gentleman. Ladies from all walks of life have had a lot of reasons to complain about how men should improve their manners. One thing for sure, life will be easier for both the men and women if men take the first move to become well-mannered.
1) Have Table Manners
It’s not just in our country that people don’t have the adequate table manners, it happens in other countries as well. In more ways than one, some men have the problem of eating at a table full of people like if they are eating alone. For example, chewing with their mouths open and talking to people while chewing with their mouths open. It’s not a pretty sight for anyone to see and this is why we all need to have some good table manners.
2) Open Doors
Men used to be chivalrous is something that a lot of women say. They say that because these days most men don’t bother to hold the door at a public place open for the person who’s right behind them. A lot of people have had doors slammed on their faces, much to their disappointment. As a gentleman, helping someone through small things like this goes a long way to show how chivalrous we are.
3) Be More Polite
Being polite is not that hard to do, even in strenuous situations. Men should learn to be more polite on a daily basis to everyone, especially the elderly and kids. Sometimes we are in situations where we are having a bad day and when dealing with others, we tend to forget not to affect them with what we have gone through. Being polite means going out of your way even though you don’t want to.
4) Be More Courteous
Throughout our lives, we have been taught to be nice to others. To be nice is to show that we never forget to thank someone or say “please”. We come across people, who do things for us without us even realising it such as the drivers, the cleaners, the waiters and other people that we surround ourselves with. Yes, it’s their jobs to do so, but being courteous to them wouldn’t kill you either.
5) Not To Be Nosy
Humans are curious beings by nature. However, it’s a bad manner when a man gets intrusive with someone just to know more. It’s inappropriate, especially if it’s done with a woman. Sometimes, people don’t feel like sharing everything and men, who are nosy, should be able to understand that. No one likes a busybody.
6) Be Patient
Life is not easy and it’s proven by the hardships we face as we grow older. This is why we need to be more patient. By nature, women are known to be more patient than men. Whether it’s dealing with children or the elderly, most women are found to be the ones working in public places, where patience plays a huge part. Some men tend to be less patient or even hot tempered. Being patient is a manner that men should adopt to become a gentleman.
7) Treat Your Equals With Respect
We are judged by our actions to all beings on this earth, which is exactly why it’s important for men to treat everyone around them with respect. It could be their parents, siblings, neighbours, shopkeeper or anyone else that you come across on a daily basis. There’s no guarantee on who will help us when we are down and out some day. At least, by treating everyone with respect, we know who we can count on.
8) Be Nice To All Kinds Of People
Men are known to be the ones with a sense of humour. More often than not, their sense of humour might mean making fun of others. This is one mannerism that starts at a young age, from the time they go to school to the time they start working. It doesn’t matter if others are different from us, what matters is that we are nice to them and not call them names in front of them or behind their back.
9) Ladies First!
Ever heard of the phrase, “Ladies First”? Apparently, some men haven’t. In public places, it’s considered a good manner to let the ladies go first, whether it refers to commuters or any other situations. When travelling in public transports in Malaysia, we often see situations where the men are sitting and occupying seats while the women are standing up. Most likely in these situations, the men don’t get up and give their seats to these ladies. That shouldn’t be the case if these men were considerate enough and understood how it’s important for them to be a gentleman and offer their seats to those, who need it more.
10) Don’t Stare
It’s not a joke that some men like to stare weirdly especially at ladies. Now that's not a nice gesture and what a gentleman would do. Not only it is cheesy, it shows that you are judgmental. No one appreciate being stared at, moreover the ladies. It's rude!
