The year-end school holiday has already begun and one of the can’t-miss activities is to catch some of the exciting movies that will be released in cinemas. With plenty of movies to choose from, we have rounded up 10 Movies To Look For This Year-End School Holiday in 2018.
1) Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 (November 22)
The Story: This time, Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) and his best pal Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) embark on a journey to the online world to get their hands on a replacement part to save Vanellope’s Sugar Rush video game.
The Buzz: The 2012 original movie was already perfect enough. But the sequel is far from a cash grab, as co-directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston managed to blend a successful mix of comedy, action and heartfelt moments of friendship.
2) The House With A Clock In Its Walls (November 29)
The Story: Based on the 1973 novel of the same name by John Bellairs, the story follows a young boy named Lewis Barnavelt (Owen Vaccaro) who is sent to Michigan to live with his uncle Jonathan (Jack Black) in the old house. Soon, he begins to discover that the house lies a sinister entity.
The Buzz: The Halloween season may be over, (the movie was already released in the US back in September 21st) and we are like three months too late. And yet, you can’t deny that it released just in time for the year-end school holiday season! The biggest selling point here is the stellar cast led by Jack Black and Cate Blanchett. Not to mention this also marks Eli Roth’s first family-friendly movie — a radical departure from his usual graphically-violent horror pictures as seen in “Cabin Fever” and “Hostel”.
3) March Of The Penguins 2: The Next Step (November 29)
The Story: A follow-up to the Oscar-winning documentary “March Of The Penguins” back in 2005, this sequel chronicles a young penguin’s journey to the unknown.
The Buzz: Do we really need a sequel to “March Of The Penguins”? Whether or not this follow-up manages to recapture the charm and magic of the first instalment remains to be seen. But at the same time, it’s hard to ignore the existence of this sequel, given the cute-as-a-button young penguin’s appearance with Morgan Freeman reprising his role as the documentary’s narrator.
4) Guang (November 29)
The Story: This heartfelt drama centres on Wen Guang (Kyo Chen), who is struggling with social interaction due to autism. Although he is having a tough time coping with his daily routine, he never gives up on his personal quest — the search for the final glass that would unlock the joy he’s been looking for.
The Buzz: Have you seen Quek Shio Chuan’s 2011 award-winning BMW Shorties of the same name? If not, you should check it out right here. Again directed by Shio Chuan, this big-screen version of “Guang” will definitely tug at your heartstrings and yes, you might need a box of tissues as well.
5) Mortal Engines (December 6)
The Story: This post-apocalyptic adventure follows a disfigured young woman named Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar), who is on a mission to lead a rebellion against the motorised giant city on wheels.
The Buzz: The post-apocalyptic tone, the steampunk inspiration and not to forget the involvement of Peter Jackson himself, who is credited as both co-producer and co-writer of this big-screen adaptation of Philip Reeve’s 2001 award-winning novel.
6) Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (December 7)
The Story: In this animated feature, Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) is a high-school teenager from Brooklyn who turns into a superhero nicknamed Spider-Man. He soon discovers that he is not the only Spider-Man in the neighbourhood after teaming up with other web-slinging superheroes of the Spider-Verse.
The Buzz: Just in time with all the Hollywood’s obsession over racial diversity, it is definitely a breath of fresh air to see an African-American version of Spider-Man other than the original Peter Parker. The vibrant animation does look like the pages of a comic book coming to life, with a stellar voice cast featuring the likes of Shameik Moore, Mahershala Ali and Liev Schreiber.
7) Aquaman (December 13)
The Story: In this first solo “Aquaman” movie, Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) discovers that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, where he must step up to lead his people.
The Buzz: The DCEU is in shambles, particularly after the less-than-stellar result of last year’s “Justice League”. But it looks like there’s a positive hope for “Aquaman”, which features the charismatic Jason Momoa in the titular role while director James Wan manages to captivate us with the fully-realised underwater world of Atlantis.
8) Bumblebee (December 20)
The Story: An 18-year-old Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld) discovers a beat-up yellow Volkswagen Bettle in a small Californian beach town, which actually turns out to be a robot in disguise.
The Buzz: It looks like a new “Transformers” movie is in the good hands of “Kubo And The Two Strings” helmer Travis Knight. He even manages to recreate the original look of Bumblebee and the rest of the Transformers from the iconic 1984 Generation 1 animated series.
9) Mary Poppins Returns (December 25)
The Story: The magical nanny a.k.a. Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) is back to help the Banks family following a family tragedy during the Great Depression Era.
The Buzz: Attempting to revive “Mary Poppins” with a decades-long sequel is obviously an uphill task. Besides, the original 1964 musical was a tremendous hit back in the day. It even garnered a whopping 13 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. Not to forget Julie Andrews famously won an Oscar for Best Actress playing the titular role. Still, the sequel looks promising enough with Blunt in the lead alongside “Chicago” Rob Marshall taking charge as the director.
10) Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy (December 25)
The Story: In this “Ip Man” spin-off, Cheung Tin-Chi (Max Zhang) has been laying low after the events of “Ip Man 3”. However, he finds himself in deep trouble after encountering a foreigner played by Dave Bautista.
The Buzz: Max Zhang proved himself as a worthy opponent against Donnie Yen in “Ip Man 3” back in 2015. With legendary Yuen Woo-Ping in charge as a director, expect a lot of hard-hitting action sequences along with notable appearances including Dave Bautista, Tony Jaa and Michelle Yeoh.
