Life seems to be slowly on the path back to “normal”, or “normal” as can be during these times, and that includes having the choice to dine in. However, some may still feel like it isn’t totally safe enough to remove masks and eat in public, preferring a more private space where they can dine with more peace of mind with their friends/family instead. Note: Most Chinese restaurants with big names such as “Oriental” or “Imperial” are known to having private dining rooms, so we’re excluding them from this list for now.


1) Bunglow 37

Bunglow 37 is an all-day dining restaurant serving modern European cuisine with some Asian influence thrown in. As a restored 14,500 square foot bungalow, it’s spacious and event has an event space and of course, private rooms. There are eight private rooms for you to choose from, including a cigar lounge and a karaoke room. Room charge or a minimum spend applies for these private rooms. As an alternative, they also have an al fresco dining deck, perfect for sunset and night views over the Bangsar skyline.

2) Emily’s Steakhouse KL

Emily’s Steakhouse is available not only in KL, but in Penang and the UK as well. Having grown up in Penang, Emily considers Malaysia her home, and brings in a real taste of Britain serving classic hot English breakfast, fish & chips, and char-grilled steaks. Their KL outlet is located on the ground floor of Sheraton Imperial Hotel on Jalan Sultan Ismail, so if you have time and are looking for a getaway, you can eat and stay too! VIP (private rooms) are available as well.

3) MAKI Japanese Restaurant

Located in Desa Sri Hartamas, MAKI Japanese Restaurant is a Japanese restaurant specialising in yakitori, where various types of skewers are available. They also serve other types of Japanese food you’d expect at a Japanese restaurant, and be sure to call ahead to reserve a private room. The room is located at a corner with a door for maximum privacy, and its spaciousness means that it can easily fit eight to ten adults!

4) 33 Blue Room

33 Blue Room specialises in pork dishes and wine, complete with a jazzy ambience. Tucked away in one of PJ’s industrial areas, it’s not what you’d expect at all. 33 Blue Room does have a private room available, though its setup consists of a coffee table and sofas. At time of writing, this room accommodates a maximum of 8 pax, and there’s a minimum spend of RM1,300 for the room.

5) UOVO ASADOR

Talk about private and exclusive! UOVO ASADOR is a private dining room, ideal for occasions whether for business or pleasure. What’s more, they aim to make your dining experience there a memorable one, so they even go the extra mile by coming up with customised menu for each group. Vegetarian options are available as well, so all you have to do is ring them to make a reservation, and let them know if you have any special dietary requirements!

6) PRIVATE @ Chow Kit

Catering to the demand to eat out safely during this time, PRIVATE @ The Chow Kit is where you can go to enjoy a unique private dining residence within intimate guest rooms. These rooms are on the first floor of boutique hotel The Chow Kit, and each room can house a maximum of six people during this time. Service requests, additional orders, customised decor and even playlists can all be arranged upon request, and the dining experience is designed to keep touchpoints and interactions with staff to a minimum. 7) Rama V

Rama V is regarded as the first Thai fine dining restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, having been established two decades ago. Set in a standalone bungalow, Rama V is opulent yet cosy, serving up both traditional and modern Thai dishes. As such, you can look forward to familiar yet forward Thai dishes in a comfortable environment, and you also have the choice to dine in private rooms. There are a few types of private rooms available: Chalet (20 – 24 pax) at RM250++ per room, Normal Room (8 – 10 pax) at RM150++ per room, and Couple Room (2 pax) at RM100++ per room.

Opium KL is one of the go-to spots in KL for Asian food/oriental cuisine with a twist. Many also commend their drinks! The dishes they serve can only be described as “interesting” to say the least, while the decor pays homage to old-school Chinese vibes.
