You Have to Try These 10 Food If You Are in Penang

Penang has been known to be famous not just because of the beaches, but because it is considered to be a food heaven. According to our experience, the places listed below are a must visit if you are in Penang.


1) Ah Leng Char Kuey Teow

Please take note, they have a morning stall along Jalan Dato Keramat, but the night stall which is at Lorong Zoo would be better. Remember to ask for “duck egg” as it would enhance the fragrant of the noodles. Also, if you are a seafood lover, you could also ask for mantis prawn.

2) Penang Road Chendol

Don’t be surprise to see a long queue waiting to be served. There are 2 Chendol stalls along this road, remember to look for the one with Phua Chu Kang’s photo on the stall.

3) Pasar Air Itam Laksa

Located just along Kek Lok Si Temple at Air Itam wet market. Penang Asam Laksa is rated the number 7th most delicious food in the world. The soup comes thick with the signature “hae ko” (thick sweet prawn paste) and shredded fish. The taste is just amazing with the combination of sweet, sour, and spicy at the same time.

4) Padang Brown Popiah

They are famous for their seafood popiah which comes together with shredded crab meat in them. The popiah skin is so thin that it seems like it melts in your mouth. Whats more amazing is that they do provide a little gravy which is rich in flavor.

5) Little Kitchen Nyonya

This place is simply amazing as it is your typical home cooked food in nyonya style. Take a step in this wonderful place and it’s like your back in the 1980’s. Besides the ambiance, the food is so delicious! They will give you a detailed explaination on each of their food and even make “nasi ulam” right infront of you by plucking the herbs and spices in their backyard. Do remember to make a reservation as they usually do not entertain walk in. The only drawback would be it could be a bit pricey.

6) Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng

They are famous for their soggy blood-red noodles with cuttle fish. Best described as a “beautiful mess”. Ask any Penangites and they will direct you to this place for mee goreng. However, some people do say that this place is over rated. Try them out and let us know your opinion.

7) Nasi Kandar Beratur

As the name suggest you should be prepared to be in a queue for at least 30 minutes before you could eat. Each curry have a different complex flavour and fragrance of spices and herbs.

8) Beef Kuey Teow

Rated to be the best in all of Penang, the broth has a very nice fragrant beefy taste. Each bowl comes with tender beef slices, tripe, beef balls and pork lard.

9) Toh Soon Cafe

This is one of the most famous classic coffee shop in Penang which is often frequented by the Lim Guan Eng. The toast, half boiled egg and coffee are made to perfection.

10) Crab Village Tanjung Bungah

You have got to try the baked crabs over, fried oyster “oh-chieng”, cockles and deep fried fish “jia hoo”. It does look like a typical run down coffee shop, but the food is good. However, it could be a little pricey.
