Communication is key at any workplace. As a leader or a boss, if words are not properly conveyed to your employees, they can be misconstrued and leave a sour taste in an employee’s mouth, even if you have no bad intention. Watch out! Here are some of the things your employees hate to hear from you and you as a boss should never say to your employees.
1) “If you cannot do it, I will find someone who does.”
Employee’s interpretation: Are you saying that I can be replaced at anytime?
2) “Learn from Peter and be like him.”
Employee’s interpretation: Ok, then get your blue-eyed boy to do all the work for you!
3) “You’re worse than the employee I had before.”
Employee’s interpretation: Then, why hire me?
4) “I pay your salary. Just do as per my instruction.”
Employee’s interpretation: So, am I not allowed to give ideas or suggestions?
5) “Can you use your brain?”
Employee’s interpretation: Are you calling me stupid?
6) “Just figure it out and make sure you don’t give me trouble.”
Employee’s interpretation: Such an irresponsible a**hole.
7) “What do you think I should do?”
Employee’s interpretation: Why don’t I become your boss.
8) “You are very lucky to get this bonus.”
Employee’s interpretation: Are you trying to say that this bonus is not due to my effort but luck?
9) “We have always done it this way. Just follow.”
Employee’s interpretation: But that doesn’t mean it is the best way to do it!
10) “You have made my life so much easier.”
Employee’s interpretation: Wait..is that a compliment or did you just reveal how free you are?
As a boss, be sensitive to your employees’ feelings. Think before you speak especially if you want them to enjoy working as well as working hard for you.
