Top 10 Cafes to Hang Out Beyond Klang Valley

We have lost count on the number of coffee places blooming around the country.  No matter you are a youngster, corporate professional, housewife, student or retiree, there are times you will want to take a short break to hang out with friends and family in a place with great ambience and relaxing music playing. While many people may have the mindset that trendy cafes can only be found in big cities like Kuala Lumpur, we are here to tell you that there are many hidden gems all over Malaysia that serve good-quality coffees and awesome desserts in the nice cozy settings. Here are the list of Top 10 Cafes to Hang Out Beyond Klang Valley you should not miss!

1. Chaiwalla & Co. Container Café

Operated since Dec 2012, Chaiwalla & Co. Container Café breaks the frame of traditional business, being the pioneer of operating bubble tea business in an eye-catching construct of converted cargo container.  Chaiwalla means tea boy in Hindi and the use of this name was inspired from the main character in the award-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire. Beautifully refurbished and giving it a vintage modern look, one can sip tea/coffee and just chill.  'Honest tea' is Chaiwalla's tagline, though we thought that 'hipster tea' seems equally apt.

Chaiwalla & Co. serves a variety of drinks such as original Thai milk tea, Chrysanthemum tea and Vietnamese coffee. Customers are able to choose a beverage base of tea, milk tea, coffee or fresh milk, flavours (caramel, winter melon, vanilla & more) as well as fillings (including basil seeds & Nata de coco).  Not forgetting, you get to select your preferred sweetness level too!  Drinks aside, Chaiwalla also offers some delicious quick bites such as black pepper chicken pies with diced vegetables and meat slices, tuna puffs for seafood lovers and brownies. With its ambience and menu variety, it's not surprising that Chaiwalla & Co. has become one of the top hangout places for tourists and locals in Johor.

2. Burps & Giggles

Ipoh’s forte has always been the incredible plethora of street food, while quality high-tea sessions in hotels or all-day cafes/bistros are harder to come by until Burps & Giggles came on board in August 2012.  The café occupies the stretch of old shop lots at Kong Heng Square and serves Western, Asian and sweet treats.  Founded by Dexter Song, who spent a few years working in finance and logistics in Melbourne before returning to his hometown, this café aims to bring part of the familiar Aussie-style café concept into Ipoh.  A huge part of Burps and Giggles’ charm is its DIY décor and bohemian chic, which hope to maintain the heritage and nature of the shop lots while adding a bit of modern twist and updating the décor.

From Western-style quiches to local flavoured chicken curry pie, the “laidback” fare at Burps & Giggles is a hit with both local residents and tourists.  A must-try item on the menu is My Jammy, which consists of Angue beef patty, jalapeno, cheese, tomato jam, onion and tomato, with add-on thick cut fries.  For coffee lovers, this place serves typical favourites such as espresso and cappuccinos, made from a Bristot blend. With this new burst of activity, Burps & Giggles has changed the Ipoh’s F&B scene, from a sleepy town to a new hipster place.

Located in Alor Setar and as per suggested by its name, HABIT Art Café is a concept of art, music, and beverages combined. The general idea is to encourage people to take their minds off once you step into this cozy café.  A very suitable place for youngsters to relax and chat with friends, HABIT Art Café is also a good place for art lovers. The paintings on the walls are the reason behind the livelihood of this venue. We like how HABIT Art Café serves as a meaningful medium for local artists to display their artwork.

Founded by a husband and wife team Azemer Abdullah and Abidah Bahruddin, HABIT Art Café is located away from the hustle bustle of traffic with a river near its vicinity. This is to ensure a peaceful and fresh ambience for visitors.
