Encompassing different genres, our local music scene is constantly booming Thanks to the increasing number of musical talents. While there are some awesome works being produced by some of the local bands, we believe the local music scenes deserve further attention and love. If you are not thoroughly exposed to the noises in the local music industry, here is a list of Top 10 Music Bands in Malaysia (voted by the public) which will help you get familiarized.
A popular name amongst the Alternative music lovers, HUJAN is an award winning band and has gained fame in the local and international music scenes with their music to-date acquiring more than 580,000 fans on Facebook. HUJAN started way back in 2005 with Noh Salleh creating music demos on MySpace. To his surprise, they have gathered some avid fans within the span of few months. Deriving motivation from this, the band was then formed in 2006.
The band consists of 5 members namely Noh Salleh, AG Coco, Hang Dimas, Azham Ahmad and Izzat Huzaini. Living and breathing the element they take their name after (HUJAN which means Rain in English), their music alternates between the light, heavy and the torrential storm a reflection of the many stories, moods and agendas embedded in their songs. They sing about everything from love, God, family and to the happenings of the world. HUJAN has been on multiple worldwide tours and 2007-2008 period marked their journey as the most successful Indie Band in Malaysia at that time with UK tour as their portfolio.
2. They Will Kill Us All
Consisting of 5 band members Edwin Raj, David Leong, Amir Shazlan, Ihsan Ariffin, Herwandi Saat, They Will Kill Us All or TWKUA (for short) is an experimental, indie, pop outfit from the realms of Kuala Lumpur. Considered as one of the forerunners, TWKUA originated in 2003 as a weekend project between Edwin and David, two old friends who decided to get together to form a band to build their vision of music.
After years of tireless effort, TWKUA released their debut album Secret Episodes in 2008 and released their second album Vulture not too long after, showcasing their deep British Indie influences. Coining their music also as ‘noise pop’, do check out their song ‘Sirens’ for a melodic hooks crafted with thick layers of instrumentation.
3. Love Me Butch
Formed in 1997, Love Me Butch has a long history in the local music outfit producing Post-Hardcore and Sing-A-Long kind of genres. The band consists of Syarul Reza (vocals), Wing Meng (guitars), Kevin Kong (bass), and Jana Nair (drums) have tasted success in the early days, being nominated and winning awards in the local as well as in Asia. Their effort have seen them crossing the borders of Malaysia to countries like Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Japan participating in tours and concerts.
To-date, Love Me Butch has released countless Eps and 3 albums with their latest album ‘Worldwide Transgression’ being released in Dec 2011 and sold more than 1000 copies within 3 weeks of its release in record stores. For some fast, heavy and furiously catchy metal roots, Love Me Butch is the band you should tune in to.
Bittersweet is a British-pop-rock-influenced band which was formed in 2004. Originated from Ipoh, they go beyond the conventional by combining elements such as rock, punk, indie, pop and disco in their music. Bittersweet is established by 4 aspired young musicians namely Herri (Guitar, Vocals), Emai (Keyboards/Synths, Vocals), Fizan (Lead Vocals) and Moon (Guitar, Vocals).
Looking up to legendary bands like Oasis, The Stone Roses, and The Beatles, Bittersweet likes showing up on the stage in well-fitted, color coordinated, neat suits, playing a good blend of sounds. Driven by passion, in 2006, Bittersweet released their first album called 'Perfect Match' followed by their second album, called 'Empire's Transition' in May 2011. With massive support fans all around Asia, Bittersweet has toured Jakarta, Bandung, Singapore and all around Malaysia. 5. A4J (AZUREFORJANNE)
Inspired by Tan Sri Dr. P. Ramlee, Dato' Sudirman Haji Arshad, Freddie Mercury, Carly Rae Jepsen, BANGS, Rajinikanth, AZUREFORJANNE (A4J) is a post-hardcore band from Kuala Lumpur. Formed in late 2011 with a common goal in music, SanJay, Bryan, Cottie, Irfan and Russel envisage A4J to be a proactive energy and a unique voice. They shape A4J as such not to be labelled as the common sound. They want to touch hearts, and aspire to be somewhat a countermeasure for the heavy hearted and everyone who listens to their music.
With pure dedication, blood, sweat and heart, A4J’s hard work and talent have seen them performed on glamourous stages such as Rock The World, Gegey Fest, MASiF, Jakcloth across borders. Their music has touched the souls of countries like US, Australia, Russia, Japan and many more. Backed by strong ambition, A4J believes “A story that leads to a thousand tales, begins here” and this is only the beginning.
PESAWAT is a Malaysian indie rock band formed in 2005. The band consists of Jipie (vocals, guitar, piano), Kudux (drums, backing vocals), Nizam Camel (guitar, backing vocals) and Mann (bass). Three years after, they roped in Danial Nor on synthesizer. They call themselves “PESAWAT”, which means “airplane” to reflect their fast and loud music and to symbolise their dream to bring their music across the world.
PESAWAT made their way into the public spotlight in November 2008 after releasing their first single called “Mirage” which skyrocketed to no. 1 after debuting on FlyFM Campurchart. Since then, PESAWAT continued to make waves with their bilingual hits such as “Excuse me, “Rasional Emosional”, “Mesti Mau” (the official theme song for Twisties), debut album “Take Off” and more. Their music is influenced by bands like The Smith, Joy Division, Editors, Pegion Detectives, We are Scientists, The Swallows, Black Dog Bone and The Rakes, to name a few.
7. The Padangs
Thrive on metal, hardcore and experimental, The Padangs is powered by 6 passionate team members Jo (Vocals), Ridtz (Guitar), Ax (Bass), Andry (Guitar) Syakir (Drums) and Epul (Keyboard). This young and spirited band from Kajang has performed in more than 300 gigs within and beyond the country since their founding in year 2006. Having the vision to prosper in the ‘Underground Scene’, The Padangs was formed initially to fill up free time on a weekly basis.
The Padangs believes the key to making a band special is to enjoy playing music together in order to strengthen the bond of relationship between each member. Backed by such unity, they have successful stamped their presence in the country with their 2008 debut titled “Accidents Were Made” followed by creations such as “No Mercy” and “Waste No Time” in the year 2011.
8. Kids On The Move
Started out in the early 2003, Kids On The Move today consists of five young hearts, Dean, Kaza, Caca, Syahmi and Minn. With Hardcore being their passionate genre, KOTM has been constantly on the road, showcasing their talents and sharing stage with bands such as FC Five, Comeback Kid, The Geeks, Have Heart, Parkway Drive, Ignite and Break Even.
KOTM carries a clear and bold vision. They strive-on-forward with dreams to play outside Asia and to conduct more tours. With a few signature releases such as “Directions” and “Changes” under their belt, KOTM is influenced by bands such as Ten Yard Fight, Hold True, Miles Away. Just a matter of time, Kids on the Move will break out to become a “Grown Up” in the hardcore outfit.
A six piece band from Kuala Lumpur, Maddthelin was formed in 2008 consisting of Yasmin and Lenny on vocals, Daniaal and Izzul on guitars, Asyraf on bass and Adiel on drums. Maddthelin delivers a mixture of post-hardcore and screamo elements in their music. If you are a fan of Eyes Set to Kill (an American posy-hardcore band from Phoenix, Azirona), you may fall in love with Maddthelin too.
Maddthelin prides themselves with their Singles such as “The Best For Me to Stay”, “Dawn of Tomorrow” and “Forfeit” which will leave strong impression in your head after listening. Yasmin Matthews, one of the lead singers of Maddthelin, who is also a Malay-British mixed blood has poised to be one of the pillars of strength for the enthusiastic band too.
10. Massacre Conspiracy
Also known also M16, Massacre Conspiracy plays Melodic Metalcore with a group of 6 including Ash (Lead Vocals), Emy (Drums), Sonny (Guitar/Vocals), Godoy (Guitar), Daniel (Bass) and Ax (Keys/Synth). Founded in the year of 2008, M16 is largely known for their upbeat music and outstanding live performance.
M16 made a name for themselves by building on the momentum from their fruitful singles such as “Start Looking towards the Sky” and “Bloodless”. This led them to produce their full-length album "Lost Holocaust” which was released in the year 2013. Some other M16’s milestones include playing in the Rock the World stage and Canada’s top annual music festival Envol et Mecadam. Not to forget, clinching the "Breakthrough Artist" Award at the 8TV's Shout Award in 2012.
