Malaysia is known for its diverse range of delicacies – not just local food but also food from other countries. Korean, Mexican, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese – you name it, we’ve got it. And when it comes to Japanese food, you cannot leave out ramen – a noodle dish made of bouncy noodles in delicious broth. In fact, ramen is one of my go-to comfort food whenever I’m looking for a warm and hearty meal.

As most of you might know, the delicious broth in ramen is usually made from stock based on pork and shoyu which are not halal. So, looking for halal ramen may not be an easy task unless you continue reading to the list below where I have compiled 7 places where you can go to slurp up some halal ramen in Klang Valley.

Disclaimer: Not all restaurants have the halal certificate, but they do use halal ingredients or they are pork-free. Please confirm with the restaurant before having your meal there.

1. Maruki Ramen

Located in The Linc in KL, drop by for some slurp-worthy ramen if you are hanging out in the city. With a kitchen that is spearheaded by a Japanese chef who honed his skills in Tokyo, you can expect the most authentic and wholesome bowl of ramen to fulfil your ramen craving. Head Chef Kita-san and team handmakes the noodles daily using imported halal wheat flour from Japan. Pair that with broth made of slow-boiled free-range chicken, bonito, kelp, vegetables, and spices and you get an incredibly satisfying meal. If it is your first time, we recommend that you try the Classic Shio Ajitama that comes with a glazed chicken roll, soft-boiled egg and fresh leek.

When a BBQ joint forays into ramen, you can imagine how good the broth is going to taste. Umami Boru which means ‘savoury bowl’ in Japanese is a spin-off from the Beard Brothers who is known for their scrumptious barbequed halal briskets and other BBQ meats. To bring you the best halal ramen experience, their ramen broth is cooked for 10 hours to allows the savoury goodness from the meat to be fully infused into the broth. One of the few Muslim-owned and halal-certified Wagyu Yakiniku restaurants in Klang Valley, Wagyu Kokoro Halal Yakiniku is the place to go if you are craving for some melt-in-your-mouth wagyu along with a warm bowl of ramen. Serving premium quality Japanese wagyu beef, most patrons are there to indulge in their delicious grilled meats. 5. Kagura Ramen

With the main store located in Tokyo, there is no doubt that Kagura Tokyo Chicken Ramen is as authentic as it gets. Even in Tokyo, the pork-free version of ramen that is made with chicken broth is rare but popular nonetheless. Located at the Signatures Food Court in KLCC, there used to be another outlet in Lot 10, but it seems to have temporarily closed due to the pandemic. Although they started with two versions of soup on their menu – premium or natural – a look at their social media pages show that they have added on new ramen dishes such as Tantanmen and SuRahPaitan Men. All ingredients are halal-friendly, and the soup is boiled daily to ensure its freshness.

Address: Level 2, Signatures Food Court, Petronas Twin Tower, 201A-C, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, 50088 Kuala Lumpur
Opening hours: 11am – 8pm

6. Ramen Seirock-ya

The first time I had ramen at Ramen Seirock-ya, I didn’t even know they were using chicken broth. When in fact, they specialise in Toripaitan ramen which comes with a creamy and thick broth that is made flavourful from boiling chicken bones for hours. Adding on to that, Toripaitan ramen is popular among women because of its collagen-rich broth. Armed with that knowledge, I went back again recently to give it another go. I ordered their signature dish which is the Toripaitan Extreme Egg. Unfortunately, the Damansara Uptown branch only allows for takeaway so I had to bring my ramen home before I could enjoy it. I was worried that it wouldn’t taste good because ramen is best eaten when it’s hot, but I was pleasantly surprised. It still tasted good when I got home and I’m definitely adding them to my list of ramen places. They also have two more branches in Central i-City and IOI Mall Puchong.

Address: 6-G, Jalan SS 21/35, Damansara Utama, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor
Opening hours: 11.30am – 8.30pm

7. Spacegrey

An unassuming place located on the second floor of the shop lots in SS2, I actually came across Spacegrey when I was looking for a florist. Imagine my surprise when I walked up and saw that I was in a tiny café instead. Spacegrey is tucked away inside Floralreef – which I must say is a pretty cool combination. It started off as a café selling coffee and cookies, but it has now expanded to daifuku balls and ramen. Well, there is only one ramen dish on the menu – the Nothing Special Ramen – and it is available in limited quantities. Made using parts of chicken and vegetables to create the broth base, the soup is light and sweet and instead of the traditional cha-shu as the topping, they have replaced it with slices of crispy smoke duck breast instead. It sounds like an interesting bowl of ramen that is far from nothing special, so I do hope they make it a permanent dish on the menu soon.

Address: 149a, Jalan SS 2/24, SS 2, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor
Opening hours: 10.30am – 5.30pm (Closed on Tuesdays)
Contact no: +6018-220 5168
